Four Corners Diner
Four Corners Diner co-owners Marty Hutnick and Rob Edmunds love what they do, and it shows. Their breakfast-and-lunch eatery is a Romeo community hangout and features homemade dishes, right down to the potato chips they cut and fry themselves and their homemade dressings and soups. Many regulars stop by daily to enjoy their favorites, from french toast to eggs benedict. Order online to pick up or dine in 7 a.m. through 3 p.m. every day except Tuesday, when the diner is closed.
What’s New? – Farmington Farmer’s Market – August
Walt Gajewski, market manager for the Farmington Farmers Market, stopped by to share some August happenings, including the 17th annual Elks corn roast on Aug. 10, the bicentennial beer celebration on Aug. 17 and the third annual ice cream social on Aug. 24. The market is also proud of its accolades as the best farmers market for the eighth year in a row in the Vote 4 Detroit contest.
O’Tooles
Robin Silveri, co-owner of O’Tooles, and Carlos Cook, the chef, are celebrating the downtown Royal Oak’s 22nd anniversary this year. The eatery features 40 different beers, including many Michigan craft beers, plus a full bar and dishes like O’Tooles famous Reuben sandwich. Patrons enjoy Monday night trivia, happy hour and disc jockey music nights, plus the Irish pub’s involvement in town events like the Woodward Dream Cruise and Arts, Beats & Eats.
Flipside Records
Initially opening its doors in Clawson in 1983, Flipside Records has since relocated to a new location in Berkeley with an expanded inventory that includes electronics, smoke accessories, collectibles, DVDs and Blu-Rays, T-shirts, and more. Customers have noted that Flipside has the best heavy metal vinyl section in Metro-Detroit. Owner Todd Fundaro takes pride in his customer service as he loves chatting with folks who come into the store and taking a look at what they bring into the store for trade-in.

Secret Bakery
Max Leonard always loved baking, and he got really good at making sourdough bread. Beginning in 2018, he sold it out of his home in Hamtramck, and then in Ferndale … until local government found out. Now he has a retail location that’s open only on Wednesdays and Sundays, typically offering five types of bread (including the popular sourdough loaf), plus sweet treats and savory items like olive fougasse. Secret Bakery was named to the Detroit Free Press 2024 best new eateries and continues to be just as popular as it was when Max was baking out of his home kitchen.
What’s New? – Never Forgotten Bakery – Door Dash
Michelle Neal, owner of Never Forgotten Bakery in Farmington, has a new service to announce. Her bakery now participates in DoorDash. Customers now have the convenience of ordering their bread and other baked goods via the DoorDash application and having it delivered directly to their homes. Of course, you can always visit the bakery, too!
House of Barbecue
Collier Willis, chef and owner of House of Barbecue in downtown Clawson, has honed his cooking skills over the years, even serving food out of food trucks during the pandemic. House of Barbecue is about two and a half years old, and features not only great barbecue dishes, but crab cakes, king crab and more. You can even find vegetarian and vegan dishes like smoked tofu and vegan greens, as well as macaroni and cheese. Stop in for locally sourced food and fine dining in a casual setting.
What’s New? – Coeur
Jordan Smith, owner and chef for Coeur in Ferndale, stopped by to tell us what’s new. News includes an updated patio and interior, as well as some accolades. Coeur was named no. 1 best new restaurant for 2024 by the Detroit Free Press and received a Wine Spectator award of excellence. The restaurant has also made Wine Enthusiast’s 50 best wine restaurants list. Look for wine tastings and classes coming up at Coeur in the fall.

Mojave Cantina in downtown Clawson is well-known for its fresh, authentic Mexican fare – some of it with a twist, like the Southwest egg rolls. What’s New? – Birmingham Farmers Market
Jaimi Brook, market manager for the Birmingham Farmers Market, which runs on Sundays, updated us on Super Farmer Day. Kids are encouraged to wear superhero gear, and there will be fire trucks and other local heroes at the market, plus superhero tattoos and more.
Michigan Originals – Rinaldi Sausage
Nick Perrone and his business partner Vince Palazzolo have made a conscious decision to remain Michigan-based. Their company, operated out of Shelby Township, makes fresh – never frozen – sausages that are free of nitrates, MSG, corn syrup and other additives, and typically gluten-free as well. They’re made from fresh meat within 24 to 48 hours of arrival at the Shelby Township processing center, and then shipped to stores. Rinaldi offers 14 flavors of sausages, including the popular motor city sausage, with garlic, anise, paprika and cayenne, and the coney brat with cheese, which offers all the flavor without the mess. Find Rinaldi Sausages in Kroger and Meijer meat counters, Hollywood Market, Papa Joe’s and other independent stores.
Saltwater Eatery
Penny White opened Saltwater Eatery in Troy just a few months ago. Her eatery is famous for its lobster rolls, but also offers seafood pasta, poutine and other New Orleans fare. If you’re not a seafood fan, try the steak frites, chicken andouille pappardelle or the roasted veggie plate with balsamic and smashed redskin potatoes. The atmosphere is comfortable and semi-casual. Penny is looking forward to adding a Sunday New Orleans brunch, and the addition of Saltwater’s liquor license.
