Mother-daughter co-owners of Broth Masters, based in Ferndale, are proud of their organic, slow-cooked chicken and bone broth. Dorothy and Laya Barak got into the business when seeking healthy foods that were anti-inflammatory and good for gut health. The broth comes frozen and has no added sodium or preservatives, and it’s available to ship nationwide. Made from pasture-raised bones and fresh vegetables, the broth is thick and hearty, and good for sipping alone or for use in recipes.

Lone Light Spirits

Joe Lordon, founder and lead distiller for Lone Light Spirits, told us about this Ferndale-based distillery that opened a new tasting room in downtown Farmington on Aug. 1. The establishment, located on Farmington Road just south of Grand River, offers a menu of seasonal craft cocktails that include their popular spirits, including vodka, gin, bourbon, rum (a new addition) and coffee liqueur. Lone Light partners with many local businesses, including Ground Control in Farmington, B. Nektar Meadery in Ferndale and Mr. Kebab in Ferndale, which provides some snack items offered at Lone Light Spirits. Check out Lone Light’s Spirit of ‘33 Club for special discounts.

Sammie Algohaim has been working in restaurants since he was 16. His latest venture, Unique Coney Island in Sterling Heights is a family-friendly coney restaurant with a twist. The most popular menu items are the coneys, chicken lemon rice soup and the unique pita, featuring chicken, melted cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayo. The eatery is a popular place to gather and also hosts special events and offers catering, Door Dash and online ordering for your convenience. Algohaim also mentioned that Unique Coney Island is open on holidays like Christmas, when many restaurants are closed.
