Meals on Wheels Delivery Drivers Needed

You can make a difference in just an hour a week through Meals on Wheels. Meals on Wheels is a nation-wide program that delivers nutritious, well-balanced, and affordable meals to home-bound seniors Monday through Friday.

The starting point for Meal Delivery in Auburn Hills is the Auburn Hills Community Center, where volunteers pick up meals and deliver them to home-bound seniors designated on each route. These deliveries include a hot meal, a smile and a daily visit and wellness check on a member of our community. For some, this may be the only visit they receive that day.

Fill out the application online or download it. Then, return it by email to AuburnHillsVolunteer@auburnhills.org, mail, or drop it off at the Auburn Hills Community Center.

Teens Anti-Valentine’s Party

On Feb. 6 from 6 to 7 p.m., bring your teen to the library to not celebrate Valentine’s Day.

The Teen (Anti) Valentine’s Day Party promises a lovely or sarcastic time celebrating this polarizing holiday. Participants can make duct tape roses in red or black, or a variety of other colors. Write candy heart messages, sweet or sour. Make Valentine’s Day cards with Jack Skellington’s creepy face. Or paint your Valentine’s attitude onto a rock, and more.

We think Valentine’s Day’s best feature is the excuse to eat more chocolate, so we’ll definitely have some of that.

Troy Community Lions Club Funds Universal Access Collection at Troy Public Library

The Troy Community Lions Club established a new Universal Access Collection for the Troy Public Library. The items are for adults and teens with low vision.

The collection includes 50 popular young adult large-print titles, which can be enjoyed by both teens and adults. These books will benefit both patrons with visual impairments and striving readers, as recent research has shown that large print books for young adults can increase reading performance and build confidence. Students of all ages who are learning English as a second language can also benefit from large print materials, as they can motivate striving readers to keep trying and help them make progress with reading and feel successful.

In addition, the collection includes two C-Pen readers – portable, pocket-sized devices which, when run over text, instantly display definitions and read the words aloud. They also scan and capture lines of text for uploading to a PC or Mac into nearly any application.

There is also a Carson ezRead Digital Magnifier, which transforms a television into an electronic reading aid. Screen-oriented teens will find these very user-friendly, and adults with low vision will be able to enjoy print materials that may have been inaccessible to them until now.
