What’s New? – Doc Sweet’s Candy Company

Dave Sklena, owner of Doc Sweets’ Candy in Clawson, stopped by to tell us what’s new for the season. As the largest retail candy store in Michigan, Doc Sweets’ sells everything from TikTok fame items like sour wax candy to vintage treats like penny candy and Wacky Wafers. For Halloween, check out the store’s eyeball and pumpkin-shaped candies, candy corn, Halloween gummies and more. Doc Sweets’ also offers more than 200 different types of soda, with everything from old fashioned root beer to avant garde flavors like maple syrup.

What’s New? – Ray’s Ice Cream

Jason Eddelston, owner of Ray’s Ice Cream in Royal Oak, stopped by to tell us about some fun Halloween and fall offerings. The parlor serves up molded ice cream in the shape of witches, pumpkins and skeletons, plus new flavors like Halloween Cookies ‘N’ Cream. Ray’s is also collaborating with Blobs to include lower-sugar gummies in sundaes and other ice cream treats. Pumpkin Pie Ice Cream with Pumpkin Pie M&Ms is another favorite for the fall season, along with staples like cinnamon ice cream. If you can’t make it to the parlor, you can find Ray’s Ice Cream at several local food markets.

Brigid Barron, social media and events manager for Silver Diary, stopped by to tell us about an upcoming event at the Farmington ice cream stand. Aug. 24 at noon, the business is hosting a banana split eating contest, where participants will have 10 minutes to eat as many banana splits as possible. Spectators who come to watch can also enjoy banana splits and get a deal – buy one, get one half off. This year-round ice cream stand hosts Moolinda Mondays, fundraisers for local organizations, and is very involved in the community.

What’s New? – Buddy’s Pizza

Joe Dominiak, CEO of Buddy’s Pizza, stopped by to fill us in on what’s going on for Buddy’s 79th anniversary this summer. First off, you can enjoy the 79 special through June 23, an eight-square pizza topped with 79 old world peperoni, retailing for $19.46, and with $1 going to benefit the Detroit Police Athletic League. You can also get Buddy’s annual anniversary cards at all locations. They include six vouchers valid through December for $7.90 off an eight-square pizza. Finally, on June 17, animals at the Detroit Zoo will be treated to their food in Buddy’s Pizza boxes. Additionally, $1 from every pizza sold that day will benefit the Detroit Zoological Society.

What’s New? – Barb’s Pizza and Pasties

Kevin Sell, one of the owners of Barb’s Pizza and Pasties in Clawson, stopped by to tell us about the business’s 41st anniversary this year. Barb’s claim to fame is Upper Peninsula-style pasties, including beef, chicken and veggie, plus pizza, cabbage rolls, carrot cake and other from-scratch dishes. The family business uses the same recipes it’s used since it started with his mother cooking pasties for neighbors. One recent addition is the ability to order Barb’s via Door Dash. Order online or via phone to pick up in store. You can even get frozen pasties to cook later.
