Page Through Book Sale

Book worms rejoice, Friends of the Library are hosting the annual summer books sale on Monday, Aug. 19.

The Friends of the Library Summer Book Sale at the Blair Library will offer a wide selection, with proceeds going to fund programs and projects throughout the year. Hardcovers, paperbacks, magazines and audio-visual materials will be sold.

The sale runs Monday, Aug. 19 to Wednesday, Aug. 21.

 

Rep. Kuppa Announces Care Town Hall

State Rep. Padma Kuppa announced her Care Town Hall on Wednesday, Aug. 21, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Clawson High School. The town hall will offer an avenue for residents to discuss care across the lifespan, including child care, elder care and end of life care. Special guests include State Rep. Jim Ellison, Oakland County Commissioner Penny Luebs, and representatives of Michigan Caring Majority and Michigan United.

Yarn Stop Hosts Rhichard Devrieze

The yarns of Rhichard Devrieze will roll into the Yarn Stop Friday, Aug. 9 through Sunday, Aug. 10. Don’t miss this opportunity to discuss fibers and stitches.

 

Aerobatic Teams Fill the Skies at OCIA Open House & Air Show

The Phillips 66 Aerostars will once again tear into the skies at 250 mph over the Oakland County International Airport Open House & Air Show in four Extra 300L aerobatic planes. They will join other aerial performers at the Sunday, Aug. 11.

Admission is free. There is a $5 parking fee per vehicle.

The air show begins at 2 p.m.

 

Help Out Kids in Need with School Supplies

There’s still time to help the Clawson Police Department by donating school supplies. Donations are currently being accepted at the police department or pop on by the Sunday Summer Park Market on Aug. 11.

 

Precinct Workers Needed for November Election

If you’re a registered voter aged 18 and over, your city needs your help with the November election.

Police Host School Supplies Fundraiser

Clawson Police are back for their annual school supplies fundraiser. Donations can be dropped off at the police department during regular business hours, or at the department booth on Sunday, Aug. 11, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Clawson City Park during the farmers market.

 

Down on Main Car Show Slated for Aug 10

The Down On Main Car Show returns to Downtown Clawson on Saturday, Aug. 10. This event is presented by the Clawson Lions Club. The car show entries – ranging from antiques to street rods, choppers, antique campers and bicycles – take over a half mile of South Main Street starting at 14 Mile Road.

Event registration for the show will be from 8 to 11 a.m. Judging begins at 9 a.m. The event ends when the last trophy is presented. You must be present to receive your trophy. Spectators be advised it is better to arrive after 10 a.m. to avoid the display set-up and traffic. Having 400-500 event registrations is not unusual.

The event supports charities, local business and community.

All proceeds will go to “Leader Dogs for the Blind” and other charities/projects supported by the Clawson Lion’s Club.

Stem Camp Gives Students a Leg Up Over the Summer

Clawson Stem Camp is a hands-on science, technology, engineering and math camp for Clawson students going into grades 4 through 6 in the fall.

The cost for the camp is $25. Students will receive a T-shirt, water bottle and activities to take home. Camp is Monday through Thursday July 29 to Aug. 1 from 9 a.m. to noon in the MS cafeteria. Students must have registered and paid by July 11 to guarantee a shirt.

Register on the Clawson Schools website and pay for camp through PaySchool. If you would like to volunteer to help, please sign up. Volunteers must also fill out a Clawson schools volunteer form found at the Admin building.

 

Knitters Get Ready for the I-75 Yarn Crawl

You’ve heard of a pub crawl, well now there’s a yarn crawl and it’s sponsored by The Yarn Stop. The Crawl is a 10-day event where knitting and crocheting enthusiasts travel from yarn shop to yarn shop to see what is new for the 2019 fall season, experience the ambiance of each shop, get to know the personality of the owner and staff, and win prizes.

The I-75 Yarn Crawl is Aug. 2-11. The Yard Stop now has a limited supply of passports in the store for purchase. If you cannot get to the store and want a passport, use this link to purchase your passports  and request that your passport be sent to The Yarn Stop.

“Down on Main Street” is the Lions Club Car Show

Saturday, Aug. 10, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. (end time varies). Registration is 8-11 a.m., judging begins at 9 a.m.

Billy Sohns Memorial Car Show

Sunday, Aug. 25, Registration 8-10:30 a.m.

The Billy Sohns Memorial Car Show rolls into Clawson City Park Aug. 25. This is a thank you to all who supported the United Street Machine Association events and a tribute to the USMA staff who have passed. Stay for the free Rockin’ Ronnie oldies concert.

Pre-register for $15, day of is $20. Clawson Lions Club are providing coffee and donuts in the morning and a hot dog lunch will be available in the afternoon until 2p.m. Visit unitedstreetmachines.com for event information.

Magical Party Coming to Library

On Thursday, Aug. 1, Joel’s AstroReader Magical Comedy Show blasts into the Blair Memorial Library as part of the Summer Reading Final Party.

The show by Space Man Joel features dazzling magic, silly stunts, goofy gadgets and lots of audience participation. Celebrate your summer reading accomplishments with this laugh-out-loud show at the Hunter Community Center gym.

 

Keep the City Green with Smart Recycling

Please remember recycling containers are green. When trash or non-recycle items are placed in recycle bins, the entire bin is considered contaminated and must be treated as trash. Please be mindful when throwing items into these bins so that Clawson can continue our commitment to be an environmentally friendly community.

General Hot Dog Eating Contest Draws Crowd

For the third year in a row, the General Dog hot dog eating contest on July 4, drew fierce competition to see who could down the most hot dogs. The winner, Matt Holowicki, downed 13 hot dogs in five minutes. Watch the clip here.

 

Community Food Bank Open Once a Month

Those in need of food can pencil in the third Monday of every month. Food bags are available from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at 700 E. Elmwood Ave., in the building of Grace Apostolic Church.

Food donations are always welcome. Food donation boxes are located in city buildings and local businesses. Items needed include boxed dinners, cereal, canned fruits and veggies, canned soup, pasta and sauce, tuna, instant oatmeal, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter and jelly, rice, stuffing, crackers and juice boxes.
