Music Acts Announced for Arts, Beat & Eats

Arts, Beats & Eats invades Royal Oak over Labor Day weekend with artists, music, food and more. One of the highlights for music lovers are the concerts, which often feature well-known musicians and bands. This year is no exception.

Third-Eye Blind, Philip Philips, The Four Tops, Theory of a Deadman, Phil Vassar, Randy Houser and more are on the docket to perform. Check out the full schedule of concerts here.

Skoop Pedicabs Extend Free Rides Through August

When your dogs are barking, there’s nothing like a free pedi cab ride to get you from point A to point B. Luckily, the Downtown Development Authority and SKOOP Pedi Cabs is extending its free ride service in Royal Oak through August.

The electric bike taxis will continue to be available to the public on Thursdays from 5-11 p.m.; Fridays from 6 p.m. to midnight; Saturday from 6 p.m. to midnight in August.

State of the City Aug. 15 at the Farmers Market

The State of the City has been rescheduled to Aug. 15 at 5 p.m. at the Royal Oak Farmers Market. If you purchased tickets to the July 23 event, which was canceled due to a power outage, they are still valid for the rescheduled event.

Tickets for the State of the City are available on Eventbrite, and you can access through the city’s website.

F45 Fitness Studio to Open First Michigan Location

Backed by actor Mark Walhberg, fitness studio F45 Training is slated to open its first location in Metro Detroit within a year. Woodward Corners by Beaumont is going to be the home of the workout facility.

Page Through Book Sale

Book worms rejoice, Friends of the Library are hosting the annual summer books sale on Monday, Aug. 19.

The Friends of the Library Summer Book Sale at the Blair Library will offer a wide selection, with proceeds going to fund programs and projects throughout the year. Hardcovers, paperbacks, magazines and audio-visual materials will be sold.

The sale runs Monday, Aug. 19 to Wednesday, Aug. 21.

 

Rep. Kuppa Announces Care Town Hall

State Rep. Padma Kuppa announced her Care Town Hall on Wednesday, Aug. 21, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Clawson High School. The town hall will offer an avenue for residents to discuss care across the lifespan, including child care, elder care and end of life care. Special guests include State Rep. Jim Ellison, Oakland County Commissioner Penny Luebs, and representatives of Michigan Caring Majority and Michigan United.

Leadership Oakland Selects New Executive Director

Leadership Oakland selected Thomas Sommer to serve as the organization’s new executive director.

“Leadership development is critical to the success of the region. Leadership Oakland has a reputation for attracting talented and passionate people. I’m honored to serve as the new executive director and look forward to helping the program become even more meaningful and impactful,” Sommer said.

Sommer most recently served as the senior director for Corporate and Foundation Relations for Kettering University in Flint. He has more than 20 years of experience in the nonprofit sector.

Autism / Special Needs / Mental Health Awareness Notification Program

The Auburn Hills Police Department, in conjunction with the “One Mind” campaign, now offers the Autism / Special Needs / Mental Health Awareness Notification Program. This program allows residents to provide voluntary information about a person living at a specific address within the community to the police department. The information reported will assist responding officers, so they can respond and communicate appropriately with people who are living with autism, special needs or mental illnesses.

This program is completely voluntary. Residents can register by completing the form and mailing it to the Auburn Hills Police Department, 1899 North Squirrel Road, Auburn Hills, MI 48326, or submit it electronically to: Ofc. Brian Miller at bmiller@auburnhills.org.

At the time of submission, you will receive a notification sticker that you can place on your door or window as a visual reminder to the officers and firefighters responding to your home.

About One Mind Campaign
The One Mind Campaign seeks to ensure successful interactions between police officers and those affected by mental illness. The initiative focuses on united local communities, public safety organizations and mental health organizations so the three become “of one mind.”

Citizen Police Academy Accepting Applications

The Auburn Hills Police Department is now accepting applications for the Police Citizen Academy. The Academy begins Sept. 19 and runs through Nov. 14, Thursdays only from 6 to 9 p.m.

Shine the Light Walk Set for Sept. 14

Make sure to register for this event to help the Children’s Tumor Foundation on Sept. 14 to endeavor to put an end neurofibromatosis. There’s no cure for this disease, which causes tumors to grow on the ends of nerves.

Register today at shinealightwalk.org/michigan. The day of the event, registration starts at 5:30 p.m. and the walk starts at 7:40 p.m.

Save the Date for the Next Front Porch Stories

Front Porch Stories is a new event series that gives residents the opportunity to hear great stories from some of Rochester’s most interesting people. And just like the name says, it all happens from a front porch.

For the second event in the series, head to Mayor Rob Ray’s front porch to hear his stories of Rochester and beyond.

City Clerk Looking for Election Inspectors

If you would like to help with the next election, the city clerk is looking to hire election inspectors.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, a registered voter in Michigan and a U.S. citizen. Election inspectors earn $12 per hour, which includes training and election day.

Elections are Nov. 5, 2019, March 10, 2020, Aug. 4, 2020 and Nov. 3, 2020. Return the application to the city clerk for consideration.
