Clawson – January 20, 2020

Friends,

My heart is happy.

Iā€™m a huge advocate for volunteerism. Itā€™s a huge, satisfying part of my life.

With it being Martin Luther King Jr. Day, seeing all the volunteering and giving opportunities makes me proud to be in these communities. While Iā€™m not going to pretend to understand the depth and breadth of what Dr. King means to the African-American community, I truly admire the movement to create something special in his memory. I think thatā€™s one of the most profound legacies a person can leave in this world.

In talking with my aunt last week, she said something that resonated with me: To whom much is given, much is expected. I agree. Iā€™m no millionaire, but I certainly canā€™t complain about my lifestyle. My family is safe, warm and fed. We have access to doctors and teachers. Life is good.

But others arenā€™t so lucky.

Time is free and itā€™s the most important thing you can give. I encourage you to get out there this week, and every week, and lend a hand where you can. You donā€™t even need to be formal about it. Grab some paper and markers and make cards for kids in the hospital. Pick up litter at your local park. Start a pay-it-forward the next time youā€™re in the drive thru.

Itā€™s all about kindness, folks. And itā€™s the least we can do.

Stay warm,

Rebecca

Feedback to the Oakland County Executive

Oakland County residents have until Friday to let County Executive David Coulter know just what the priorities for his administration should be for 2020.

The 10-question online Citizen Survey asks residents to rank what is important to them in terms of jobs and the economy, public health, neighborhoods and housing, roads and transportation, among other items. Coulter has made it a priority to meet with residents and businesses to hear from those who want a voice in county government.

To take the survey, go toĀ www.OakGov.comĀ and click on the ā€œCitizen Survey 2020ā€ button. The survey is open until Friday. Coulterā€™s administration will use the survey results to help the county be responsive to those who live in Oakland County and ensure the policies and strategies of county government are inclusive of all residents.

Clawson – January 6, 2020

Friends,

Welcome to the New Year! I hope you enjoyed the holidays and are ready to take on the Michigan winter.

I donā€™t consider myself overly techie, but I also donā€™t think Iā€™m too far behind the times. So, when I received an Apple Watch as a gift, I had no idea what this would mean.

Understand: I grew up watching the Jetsons, Wonder Woman and ALF. We have some amazing technology these days, but Iā€™m still disappointed I donā€™t have a jetpack.

I was a little floored with my new watch. I had no idea all the things it can do. It even tells me when to breathe. But the most surprising feature to me is the ability to take phone calls ON A WATCH.

I was putting in a load of laundry and my watch started ringing. My husband and I looked around to see who stepped on a kidsā€™ toy only to figure out it was my wrist. I answered it and we talked to a telemarketer for a while just because IT WAS ON A WATCH.

This thing is straight out of the campy Batman show from my childhood. POW! If only it did the laundry.

Bring in the New Year strong.

Clawson – December 23, 2019

Friends,

Finally, the big week is here. And by that, I mean itā€™s my birthday today.

Thatā€™s right, Iā€™m a Christmas baby. Well, nearly anyway. So, beyond the usual excitement of the season, I get to lump in my birthday and the ever clever, ā€œMerry Birthday!ā€

People ask me how I like having my birthday so close to Christmas and I never know what to say. Iā€™m tempted to ask them how they like being tall or old or a Lions fan, but that just seems snippy. So, I shrug and respond, ā€œI like cake.ā€

For me, my birthday kicks off Christmasā€”itā€™s Christmas Eve-Eve. And itā€™s time to celebrate. Whatever it is you celebrate, or donā€™t, this season, know that I wish you all the best. Stay warm. Do something kind. Have fun.

Clawson – December 16, 2019

Friends,

One of the best parts of being City News editor is I get to see all the good we humans do for each other around the holidays. From toy and canned food drives to charity events and volunteering opportunities, my heart is happy.

Iā€™ve always loved the giving time of year and Iā€™m trying to instill that spirit of generosity into my kids. I had them help me donate to the Macomb Foster Closet, which gives foster kids two free wardrobes each year. I love this charity for several reasons. Thereā€™s no middle man. Our donations go from our trunk to their shelves. We are helping children in our area. And my kids are adopted. Luckily, they didnā€™t spend any time in foster care, but itā€™s a path many children have to take.

What are some of your favorite charities? Why? Letā€™s see if we can get a shout out to the ones that mean the most to us. Together, we can make an even more caring community.

Nostalgia Draws Customers to Clawson’s Scoop Vintage

Hereā€™s the scoop on downtown Clawsonā€™s Scoop Vintage: Itā€™s a nostalgic place where an array of items from bygone eras can easily hook customers.

In the case of Birminghamā€™s Kim Simon and her mom, Leslie Darga of Royal Oak, they were so impressed with what they saw in the 1,000 square-foot store on 14 Mile that they left with $100 worth of purchases and intended to tell friends and family members about it.

ā€œItā€™s well organized. Everythingā€™s laid out nicely,ā€ Simon said. ā€œItā€™s not too overpacked. Some (stores) are too big and overpacked.ā€

Clawson – December 2, 2019

Friends,

I blinked and missed November.

At my house, weā€™re in full-blown celebration mode. After Thanksgiving, we celebrated my dadā€™s birthday. Then my twinsā€™ birthday is midmonth. My family Christmas party and my birthday sit back to back on the calendar. Christmas comes through like a freight train, and after a week of putting toys together and picking packaging out of the rug, we celebrate the New Year.

Iā€™m pre-exhausted.

But this season, Iā€™m doing a few things for myself. I signed up for a virtual race to run, walk or crawl at least one mile every day between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Iā€™m also determined to enjoy a cheesy or classic (I havenā€™t decided yet) movie without multi-tasking. And I have my heart set on finding a copy of Chicken Soup for the Soul: Itā€™s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas in a store. A story of mine is published in the book and Iā€™d just like to see it somewhere.

What are your plans for the holidays? Email me at citynewseditor@localbiznews.net so I can pick up a few new ideas for my family.

Neo-Japanese Bakery Opens

Itā€™s an almost other-worldly experience that greets customers at Clawsonā€™s new White Wolf Japanese Patisserie.

The sights and smells inside White Wolf bedazzle those who visit the shop on 14 Mile near Main. Upon entering the recently opened bakery-cafƩ, patrons see a colorful display of treats and a wide-open food preparation area. Behind the counter, executive chef Doran Brooks sprinkles ground-up green tea over the popular Matcha Mille Crepes.

Clawson – November 25, 2019

Friends,

Last week, I took my first mom-cation. I went to Seattle, and for the most part, traveled around by myself. I had a wonderful time. Beyond the sights I saw and the food, I met some interesting peopleā€”Tony the bartender at Roccoā€™s, Richie the shoe salesperson at Nordstrom, the fish-throwing guy at Pikeā€™s Place.

One of the best things of my profession is how it has made me so curious about people. Iā€™ll ask anyone anything. Usually, I can get some great insight, and at the very least a telling response to my questions.

It was great to get away, but now Iā€™m back and in the throes of the holidays. Thanksgiving in a few days, then we launch into ā€œbirthday seasonā€ at my house, and of course Christmas.

Be sure to check out Local Business News for some great holiday shopping ideas while youā€™re looking through the Black Friday ads, too.

From my family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!

Clawson – October 21, 2019

Clawson – October 21, 2019

Friends,

We had a beautiful fall day this past Friday, so my kids and I played hooky and went to the cider mill.

The weather was perfect: cool temps, blue skies and the sun was warm on our backs. The apples were plentiful on the trees and the pumpkins were picture-perfect in the fields.

Going to the cider mill is so romanticized in my head. I always think about how cute Iā€™ll look in flannel and boots; how adorable my kids will be running through the orchard; how wholesome weā€™ll be out in nature gathering our food. In reality, I look like an actual farmer (not the goal), the kids are running because theyā€™re afraid of bees and our farm-to-table apples cost a whopping $26 for a half of a bushel. The doughnuts are even insanely expensive at nearly $9 a dozen.

But some aspects of the cider mill are priceless, such as convincing my kids we have to pick doughnuts off the trees because theyā€™re best when fresh. They werenā€™t 100% persuaded, but they didnā€™t want to take any chances either, so they saved a produce bag just in case we rolled by any doughnut trees.

Itā€™s always best to be prepared.

Clawson – October 14, 2019

Friends,

I got my flu shot today. It came with a spiffy purple bandage with some weird design on it. I figured if I was going to take my kids to get their vaccination, I should lead by example.

Itā€™s not going to help put their minds at ease, though. It will be a battle to get them in the car, out of the car, and then when itā€™s over and theyā€™ve undoubtedly survived the ordeal, theyā€™ll be mad at me for a while.

My conscience is clear.

However, if this year is anything like last year, Iā€™m not sure who was more traumatizedā€”them or me. They gave me a run for my money. When kids donā€™t want to do something, like get a shot, they suddenly become slippery, wet noodles with superhuman strength that can fit in any crevasse. I had no idea it was going to be so hard to get a 50-pound kid out of a Ford Fusion. By the time we got in the doctorā€™s office, we were all sweaty, some were crying, and no one was happy.

I guess this is part of the reason I run 5ks. Wish me luck.

Clawson – September 30, 2019

Friends,

Itā€™s officially autumn. Beyond the pumpkin spice debate lies a more important topic in my house: Halloween.

My 7-year-old twins have been planning their costumes since August, so Iā€™m very aware of how critical Oct. 31 is in their world. Iā€™m not the only one, either. So many communities are planning trick-or-treat events, that I canā€™t possibly list them all. As a PTO mom, Iā€™m helping plan a trunk-or-treat at our Eastside elementary.

Enjoy the fun of October. In addition to getting juiced up on candy, there are apple orchards to visit (try convincing your kids that youā€™re going doughnut picking, too, itā€™s fun), pumpkins to carve, chili to make and football to watch. Whatā€™s your favorite activity?

Enjoy autumn,

Rebecca

Clawson – September 23, 2019

Friends,

I did it! I ran my first 5k race. I went into it thinking I wasnā€™t going to make it, that I was going to let myself down. But, you know what? It was great.

I ran my personal best time. I finished in the upper half of my age group. I got a medal. I didnā€™t do as well as the pace runner who was pregnant and finished a 10k five minutes behind me. And I certainly didnā€™t run as well as the lady who didnā€™t even break a sweat when she was passing me.

But for someone who never thought to run a race, but here am. And I have to say, Iā€™m pretty proud.

Next on my list is the Kona Chocolate 5k in November.

Clawson – September 9, 2019

Friends,

Iā€™m writing this from my favorite chair, with my favorite blanket, sipping on tea. Today is a ā€œdroopyā€ day, as my son calls itā€”cloudy, rainy, cool. And I love it.

I love these last weeks of summer. Thereā€™s so much to look forward to, so much to enjoy. To me, Michigan is at its finest as itā€™s about to change seasons. Now, Iā€™m not saying I want to rush into anything. I have rules: No decorating for Halloween until itā€™s actually October and no Christmas decorations until after Thanksgiving.

What I am saying is to make sure you enjoy the moment youā€™re in, while youā€™re in it. Iā€™m trying hard to practice this myself, especially as Iā€™m training for a 5k.

Enjoy every moment, every day. Iā€™m thinking about the Addison Oaks fall color tour mentioned below. I think Iā€™ll enjoy that.

Have an awesome week,

Rebecca

Planning Commission Approves Site Plans for Two Projects

First,Ā Weiss Distilling Company filed a new site plan with facade changes and an interior re-do. The distillery, tasting room and two retail spaces will be in the planned new building. The existing two-storyĀ brick building will be the home to Sabbath Coffee, a coffee roasting business, and shared office workspace on the second floor.

Second, the ACE Hardware site is in for a huge makeover. ACE is staying and will receive a complete interior and exterior renovation. The two retail spaces on the north end of the ACE building will be removed and become the ACE garden center. But, the really big news is the new construction. There will be a new buildingĀ along 14 Mile that will form an L-shape with the existing ACE building and another story will be added over the existing ACE building.

The new construction along 14 MIle will have retail on the ground level,Ā apartments on the second and third floors and apartments on the addition over ACE. Balconies with overflowing gardens and ivy covering the staircase/elevator towers on each end of the building add green elements

Parking for the apartments will be provided in theĀ lot to the east of the building as the current PF GalleriesĀ building will be removed.

Clawson – September 3, 2019

Friends,

Where did the summer go? It seems like forever ago that I picked my kids up from their last day of school, but at the same time, Iā€™m pretty sure it was just last week that I packed my last lunchbox.

Iā€™m on the fence about back-to-school. I miss my alone time and being able to work uninterrupted. I do not miss the morning routine, folders, papers, cold, germs and everything else that comes with a new school year. Buying school supplies, a first-day outfit and shoes, meeting new friends and catching up with the friends we didnā€™t see over the summer is fun for me, though. So, Iā€™m torn.

Whatever your back-to-school feelings are, I hope you have a great kick-off to fall. And if you could, please head over to the City News Facebook page and give us a like.

Friends,

Less than three years ago, I quit my job in corporate communications and went headlong into freelancing. I called it, ā€œmy adventure.ā€ Since then, Iā€™ve been especially aware of taking risks and doing things that scare me.

Well, Iā€™m heading into another adventure next month. Iā€™m running my first 5k.

Iā€™m not entirely sure how I got talked into this. Iā€™ve never liked running. In fact, Iā€™ve warned people that if you see me running, you should probably be running, too.

Yet, here I am in the middle of training week five.

Iā€™m using a couch-to-5k app, and if weā€™re being honest, I still identify way more with the couch aspect than the 5k aspect. Iā€™ve also developed an obsession with running clothes, updating my playlist and keeping my newly chopped hair out of my face without looking like a sweaty Medusa.

The struggle is real, yā€™all.

The event is Women Run the D on Sept. 15 on Belle Isle. I have no idea if Iā€™ll keep up with running after the race, but Iā€™m enjoying the challenge and proud of my accomplishment already. My goal is to finish in the top 500 in my age bracket. Keep your fingers crossed!

Abracadabra! Sign Up For Magic Classes at Wunderground Magic Academy

If you have a budding magician in your house (you might not realize if theyā€™re invisible) Wunderground Magicā€™s classes are a great way for your child to have fun learning to become an amazing magician, performer and presenter.

Beyond the entertainment value, magic helps improve digital dexterity, coordination, visual perception, spatial relationships, critical thinking, creativity, public speaking skills, self-confidence and imagination.

Magic classes for children ages 7-13 run continuously throughout the year. The cost is $100 for six sessions. Because families are busy, Wunderground uses a punch card system that allows magic students to attend any six classes over six months.

Classes are held in the secret dungeons of Wunderground Magic on Saturday mornings from 10 to 11 a.m.

Students will receive a magic kit to hold supplies (in case the top hat doesnā€™t work out), a magic wand, a performance mat.

Sign up for magic classes anytime the store is open or stop in a few minutes before class begins to register.

Kids arenā€™t the only ones who can learn slight-of-hand tricks. Magic workshops for adults (ages fourteen and older) are held at Wunderground Magic Academy on theĀ first TuesdayĀ of each month from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The cost is $20 at the door.

Street Resurfacing Project Nearing End

The 14 Mile and Main Street resurfacing project is underway and is expected to be complete by July 4.

In addition to the new street surface, additional changes are coming to 14 Mile and Main Street. The Traffic and Safety Board recommended, and City Council approved, a change to traffic flow at the 14 Mile and Main intersection.

The Traffic Control Order will prohibit tractor-trailer combinations from turning northbound onto Main Street from both eastbound and westbound 14 Mile Road. It will also prohibit right turns from westbound traffic onto Main Street. Appropriate signage will be placed notifying drivers about the new restrictions. This change should alleviate disruption at the intersection and minimize the curb damage that has been the result of a tight turning radius.

Michigan Aiming to be a Hotspot for Job Growth as Older Workers Retire

Trade jobs are looking to be a bright spot in the Michigan economy as older workers retire. Estimates show that 545,000 skilled-labor jobs will be available by the end ofĀ 2026.

In response to the anticipated need, the Talent and Economic Development DepartmentĀ jump started a campaign called “Going Pro” to raise awareness for the growth potential in skilled trades fields and to inspire younger workers to consider the trades as a career.

ā€œThere is a big gap to fill, but we think that presents an opportunity,” said Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II, speaking at a press event at Lansing Community College’s West Campus.Ā “There are a lot of talented hardworking people in Michigan, and we want to make sure there’sĀ a pathway for them to have a high-wage, high-quality career.”

TradeĀ careers include jobs inĀ construction, manufacturing, health care, automotive and information technology. TheĀ jobs typically require some training beyond high schoolĀ but not necessarily a four-year degree, which is appealing to many because they graduate from their programs with little, if any, debt.

Clawson’s Main Street

Main Street America was created by the National Trust for Historic Preservation to help communities preserve the unique characters of their downtown areas. Downtowns have historically been the center of a community, where people gathered and got information. But, in the 1960s and 70s, the proliferation of shopping centers and malls began to pull people, energy and money out of downtown districts.

Main Street, says Joan Horton, Director of Clawsonā€™s Downtown Development Authority, provides assistance and technical support for projects designed to restore, preserve and enhance downtown areas.

ā€œIf we identify the one big thing that we could use some help with, they help with paying a consultant to come in and help with that project,ā€ says Horton. ā€œThey helped with a consultant for our downtown master plan, which we won an award for at the American Planning Association annual meeting ā€“ Exceptional Plan for A Small Town. Thatā€™s nationwide, so thatā€™s pretty impactful.ā€

On Thursday, February 14, Clawson will be evaluated for continued national accreditation by Main Street America. Board members, community members, city employees and volunteers will be invited to meet with the evaluating team.

The goal of the program is to retain the things that make each community unique.

ā€œThey evaluate you every year to see if youā€™re following the guidelines of the program to take care of the businesses, the design of the place, to have an organization and community involvement and do promotion,ā€ says Horton.

The emphasis is on continual efforts to follow the programā€™s principles. Some of the Clawson DDAā€™s efforts include annual events, social media, programs for businesses, business resources on their webpage and improvements to the downtown public spaces, such as street art and the alleyway renovation.

The program also includes faƧade grants to give design assistance for businesses to update.

ā€œWeā€™ve had several building renovations and several more coming on that are really going to make a difference to the look and feel of the downtown,ā€ says Horton. ā€œItā€™s so nice that the developers and the property owners want to make their places look like they belong to downtown Clawson. They want to fit the character and thatā€™s very exciting. Main Street is a great program. Weā€™re very happy to be part of it.ā€

In March a team from the DDA will go to the annual conference, meet people from around the country and see what theyā€™re doing to get more ideas.

Their current goal is volunteer recruitment. They are looking for community members to contribute their skills to making Clawson an even more inviting place. They are asking people to join their database, so they know what youā€™re good at and much time you have available. To participate, go to downtownclawson.com and click on ā€œGet Involved.ā€
